Clandeboye Festival Introduction by Barry Douglas

“It is very exciting for us at the Clandeboye Festival to be welcoming artists from the US/Chile, England, Scotland and Ireland and this year three Russian musicians, the violinist and conductor Dmitry Sitkovetsky, pianist Boris Berezovsky and soprano Maria Ostroukhova. We will be concentrating on the music of Tchaikovsky, not only his piano music, songs and orchestral pieces but also all three of his string quartets performed by the Ortus Quartet.  As a prelude to our Festival I am delighted to be playing with the Ulster Orchestra in a BBC Summer Invitation concert at the Ulster Hall.  At Clandeboye we continue the Russian theme with works from over ten other Russian composers from Rachmaninov to Shostakovich. Irish music is not forgotten with Field nocturnes and an evening of traditional Irish and Scottish music I have arranged for Scottish musicians Chris Stout and Catriona McKay and the wonderful local flautist Eimear McGeown. Extended over two weekends we will have evening concerts, a Sunday afternoon concert and lunchtime one-hour concerts.

“The Clandeboye Festival is also a homecoming of the all Ireland chamber orchestra, Camerata Ireland. Since the last Festival Camerata has enjoyed great success at home and abroad including tours in China, Latin America and in Washington DC.  The Clandeboye Festival is a great chance for music lovers to hear an orchestra of some of the finest musicians in Ireland, many of whom came through our Academy at Clandeboye and I also recommend the concert that our young musicians attending the Academy this year will perform on the 16th August.

“We will also feature the best from established and young fashion designers, in a fashion show by Maureen Martin, accompanied by Camerata Ireland musicians on the 18th August.  All this in a crammed nine days in the charming surroundings of the Courtyard at the Clandeboye Estate outside Bangor, courtesy of Lady Dufferin”.
